XANDER STONEFISH

Kuwiingu-neewul

Xander Stonefish is Lunaapeew and a member of the loon clan, originally from Eelunaapeewi Lahkeewiit—also known as Bucktown. A queer Lunaapeew/Anishinaabe artist and designer, Xander is currently entering their second year at OCAD University in Toronto.

As an artist and designer, Xander works with beadwork, quillwork, and stitching to create art and jewelry that reflect their Lunaapeew/Anishinaabe identity. Their work is deeply inspired by their family and community in Bucktown, often serving as a visual statement of the cultural influences that have shaped them.

Xander’s practice centers storytelling, using art to share the history of their Lunaapeew/Anishinaabe family and community. They incorporate stories and designs passed down through generations, embedding these teachings into their creative process. Xander first learned to sew while making regalia with their mother, who also introduced them to beadwork. As part of their healing journey, they explored deeper beadwork techniques and embraced the practice as a form of spiritual healing—not just adornment. Their introduction to quillwork came through community programming and cultural workshops, which continue to be a source of inspiration.
